Why the Hell Is Merit, So Merit-less?

With tons of sympathy for those socially oppressed sections of the society, how a modern youth, from a tag-less class - despite having the merits to access what she truly deserves - can explain to herself the justifications for losing a golden opportunity that could perhaps have changed the landscape of her life -- just because, someone else, by virtue of a tag and not merits, is automatically allowed to race past her?

Ask me; I have been watching this killing but silent questions on the face of dozens of students for more than a few months. You know why, because my daughter has just cleared her 12th board exam and appeared in several competitive examinations.

Thank God, she could successfully crack IP Common Entrance Test to get admission in one of the the top Engineering college in New Delhi: IGIT. But, that was not the case with many of her friends and I know, perhaps more than many of you, how they felt while watching a tag-bearing less-meritorious class-fellow moving ahead of them.

The whole India is boiling with anger against corruption at the top level, where as, none is talking about the plight of those unfortunate students who're denied what they truly deserve; not only because of constitutionally authorized reservation system, but also by fraudulent act of those common man who somehow manage to get their children enrolled in such quotas.

If there is a will, there is a way; couldn't have been misinterpreted, more negatively, for a shameful but positive outcome.

Now, the million dollar question is: Will there be another Anna Hazare, or a Ramdev, or a Kejriwal, who would dare question this constitutional binding in the light of an extremely competitive career development environment and fight for ensuring equal rights of the students on the basis of merits only -- and also expose a huge corruption engineered by so called common man?

Or, for that matter, would Anna hazare, or Ramdev, or Kejriwal would be interested to shift their focus - for a while - out of a much publicized issue and seriously look into building India's future generation entirely based on merits and capabilities?

"Dad, why the hell is merit -- so merit-less:" Was the question my daughter asked me, and I failed to answer. And, it really haunts me!

Do you have an appropriate answer? If so, please share with us!

I'm, neither a writer nor a social activist but, a common man with too many questions that I hope someone is able to answer.

Please forgive me for crossing the limits, if I have really done so!
