Is Your Organization System Driven? If not, Quit Immediately


The purpose of a system is to design the rules of the game, so as to ensure that the show must go on in accordance with a specific set of activities defined for a particular role in any organization.

In nutshell, it means, even if someone is on leave the work doesn't suffer, as the other person who takes over his place is guided by a well-defined set of procedures regarding all the activities pertaining to that role.

That's what I had learned as an auditor for ISO - 9000, when it was introduced in Bajaj Auto Ltd, Waluj, way back in 1990.

More than two decades later, when most the companies in India claim to be system driven, surprisingly, my personal experience with a dozen big Indian Corporates and fortune 500 MNC is entirely different.

For example, one of my clients, a fortune 500 company, delayed the hiring of a middle level candidate just because the concerned HR Manager happened to be on leave and no other person was deputed in his absence. The result: They lost that candidate to a competitor.

There are dozens of such examples where despite having a well defined system in place, on paper though, a lack of inertia by decision makers fails to enforce it -- causing huge direct and indirect loses to the organization.

In another example, my invoice against hiring a middle level candidate is lying unattended for more than two weeks on the table of the HR Manager who's not coming to the office for various reasons. And this company is a huge Indian corporate with a sales turnover of more than a few billion dollar per year.

What's happening in case of talent management, is a reflection of the ideology of the organization as a whole. When decision making at various levels in an organization comes to a grinding halt because the concerned persons are not available, can we call it a system driven organization?

No, I don't think so. And, if you're a part of such outfit, my suggestion to you would be to leave it immediately before succumbing to a state of permanent inertia, there by, jeopardizing your career in the long run in terms of kissing the rust!
