Leadership: To Win, You Must Lead From The Front

Re-posting an article I wrote almost a year and half ago, when I started blogging. Obviously, you would notice quite a few grammatical errors - which I have not corrected for maintaining the originality - that you may please ignore.

The prevailing state of business environment around the world  demands a continuous transformation to stay ahead of competition, and who else, other then the leaders, should lead from the front ?

I personally believe that the following four KRA's are decisive factors for the current leadership -- to ensure quantum growth of the organizations they are representing:

1.Accomplish business goal effectively by leading from the front: Leader must lead from the front, aligning themselves with all dimensions of the objective --  maintaining very high level of personal performance

Latest example of leading from the front is Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni, who, in a short span of time, stamped his authority in no uncertain terms mainly because of his consistent performance -- despite having only a few years of experience in international cricket.

2.Designing a result oriented business objective: Leaders should create powerful business objectives, so that the team members are able to identify themselves with the cause -- ensuring an extra ordinary level of commitment to achieve them.

Believe me , its the powerful cause or objective that drives individuals and act as catalyst to release an unbelievable amount of internal energy.

If the leaders are able to design such Causes and strike the chord right, a major part of their objective is achieved.

Look at Steve Jobs of Apple, who changed the face of consumer electronics with the invention of the iPod and also watch the anxiety level of the investors in view of his current health condition.

3.Building up a strong and dedicated team: Leaders should build up a strong and dedicated team  with the ability to walk an extra mile for achieving the business objectives of the organization.

Time and again we have seen the success of a unified team on every professional platform, and the leader, who can act effectively as talent manager of the organization, is surely moving in the right direction.

Don’t you think, it was a highly motivated team that Barak Obama built up during his election campaign, contributed decisively to his success in achieving the daunting task of becoming the first Non-White President of United States of America ?

Even as a President, his relentless effort to build up a good team to help him govern is a classical example of leadership quality.

4.Ensure personal involvement in important activities: Leaders should monitor the progress of a mission personally, taking the responsibility of the failure and crediting team members for the success.

Failure to accept responsibility of a catastrophe represents  failure to lead. A leader should realize that,  accepting the consequences for failure is not a sign of weakness and the sooner he accept it the faster he moves forward. So, success also depends upon this dynamic monitoring mechanism.

Mahatma Gandhi’s famous edict “For things to change, first I must change,” should be the guideline for an effective leader, and they themselves, first, must achieve the desired level of performance -- before demanding the same from his team members.

My suggestions to the aspiring leaders would be: "Embed the following Quote in your belief system to become successful.."

“Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succor you want is within yourselves. Therefore, make your own future.” - Swami Vivekananda
