Why You Must Stop Worrying about Being Happy!

In an endeavor to offer enhanced intellectual experience to my readers, I have decided to - apart from sharing my own thoughts and ideas - build a bridge, through this blog, connecting them to best of the research and original articles  from all over the internet.

Well, a difficult task, as it is, in view of the shear size of the target medium and also the time required to manually identify them; however, I would utilize best of the technologies but, the selection, unlike lots of algorithm already in operation for the same purpose, would entirely be manual to ensure an enlightened experience to my readers.

As the first step in that direction, let me share with you a research finding which is absolutely in line with my concern these days: The downsides of blindly pursuing happiness.

People who want to feel happier can choose from a multitude of books that tell them how to do it. But setting a goal of happiness can backfire, says June Gruber of Yale University, who co- wrote the article with Iris Mauss of the University of Denver and Maya Tamir of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It's one of the many downsides of happiness - people who strive for happiness may end up worse off than when they started. Via: Brain Mysteries

I completely agree with the suggestion that, the best way to attain happiness is to stop worrying about being happy and cultivate meaningful social bonds with people.

So friends, stop worrying about being happy and, just open yourself up and start freely mingling with people you like: Both in real as well as virtual life!

Update: 31st May 2011

Pursuing happiness is not necessary a good thing. Paradoxically, studies reviewed by Gruber and colleagues in their recent paper show that people who place the highest value on pursuing happiness tend to be less happy and more prone to depression. "Setting your sights on happiness as the end goal may inadvertently be setting yourself up for disappointment," Gruber says.Via: Yale Daily Bulletin
