Do We Make More Friends on Facebook, than in Real Life

Recently one of my facebook friends posted a question:

Why is it so easy to make a "friend" on facebook and so difficult to make one in real life? Has facebook changed the definition of friend?

And, most of the participants voted in favor.

Yes, I also think, the active users are developing a higher number of relationships on facebook compared to what they normally achieve in real life.

What could be reason behind this success?

Well, one of the participants said: It's because, on facebook, we are able to edit our behavior, thereby, projecting an impressive image that helps us attracting a huge number of new friends.

However, I don't really agree to this observation, since, I don't think that we can successfully continue editing our behavior on social media for a long time.

Originality comes out in course of time and friends do pick it up, may not express though!

In my opinion, mutual trust and confidence - independent of external influences - is the foundation of friendship. When like minded people, cultivating above qualities, come across each other -- true friendship is an inevitable outcome: Whether in real life, or in virtual world of social media.

Actually, in real life, beyond a point, may be a few years after the marriage, it's difficult to make good friends as we run short of time - in view of family priorities - that's needed to develop friendship. Where as on social media, with the help of technology, we can invest a lot of time even while on the go.

When we grow old, family priorities diminishes, and again we have plenty of time to invest in developing relationships.

Basically, it's that extra time, that we are able to spend with prospective friends, is what really goes in favor of making a higher number of friends on facebook.

Hence, I agree, we make more friends on facebook than in real life

What's your take on this issue?

Thanks to my facebook friend Ajay Khandelwal
