Happy People Make the Most of Everything that Comes along Their Way!

Why should we feel bad about an allegation against us if there is an element of truth in it? However, most of us do feel bad and fall into the trap of an in-built self-defense mechanism. Unfortunately, the result is unhappiness!

Recently it happened with me when one of the top management candidates, despite saying yes to an assignment in the beginning, started showing some signs of reluctance at the final stage.

Since, in in the profession of executive search, our core job is to identify the right profiles who are not actively looking for a change and convince them to move out of their current assignment, a great deal of time and efforts are normally invested in making it happen.

Same thing happened in this case also, as it took me 3 months of rigorous follow-up with this candidate to bring him to the final stage. Now that the organization had already decided to hire him, only a formal meeting with the MD was required to officially close it.

But, a few days before the proposed meeting he almost backed out citing some professional difficulties. When I shared this development with HR Head of the organization, he got annoyed and said, " Since you have failed to handle it, let me talk to the candidate."

Having successfully completed more than ninety percent of the job there was no reason for me not to feel unhappy against this statement, but a subsequent introspection convinced me what he said was absolutely correct: I did fail to deliver the net result.

With this acceptance, the feeling of unhappiness slowly started dissipating from my mind and I started feeling better.

Look, all us know that happiness is a state of mind but how many have the guts to look at things from the right perspective and admit their own mistakes? Not many!

Unless that happens, forget about achieving happiness and just keep talking about it!

One of my Facebook connections has rightly framed it, while saying:  "The happiest of people don't generally have the best of everything ; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way."

Thanks to Dr. Pankaj Khandelwal for inspiring me to write a blog on this wonderful theme
