3 Steps to Leadership Success

One of my ex bosses, with whom I had worked for more than 4 years, achieved his target of making a turn around in less than a year against 3 years specified by the top management.

Conventionally, it was an impossible target, especially when the company was on the brink of getting blacklisted by most of the customers in view of major quality related issues.

However, he made it possible through a unique combination of 3 strategic and tactical initiatives. The key areas that he attacked first, and never retired until making them almost flawless, were:

Improving Interpersonal Relationship:

Apart from developing a strong and durable relationship with this team members based on mutual trust and confidence, he helped every team members to do the same with each others.

He never failed to get into the root of every misunderstanding/difference of opinion between two individuals and helped them sort out both professional and personal differences permanently.

He achieved it through influencing their thought processes, in such a way, that all of them gradually started thinking and acting like him.

In fact, he successfully integrated all team members into one entity and, with no internal conflicts, the team worked in unison as per his guideline to achieve an otherwise impossible target of reviving the company's lost reputation and past glory.

Imparting Technical Education:

He made it a point to get into every technical details of all manufacturing processes in the plant. And in consultation with the concerned Shop Manager/Engineer, he streamlined all critical operations in terms of reducing the quality related issues to a great extent.

Each and every non conformity was studied in details and, through appropriate technical interventions, concerned shop managers were properly educated to notice deviations and avoid making mistakes in their respective shops.

Changing the Mindset:

This was perhaps the most difficult job for him: change the mindset of his team members from being satisfied with an ordinary performance to extracting the best out of them for producing extraordinary results.

But he successfully made his team members allergic to mediocrity in terms of the quality of products, and that, finally, laid the foundation of a great turnaround story.

These 3 simple steps, that all of you know and practice even to some extent, became the key ingredients of a dramatic change -- when implemented with a great deal of sincerity, and dedication.

The road to leadership success always go through the worst terrains of difficulties; however, applying a few simple but result oriented techniques can certainly make your journey a bit comfortable and hugely rewarding.
